Step 1: Choose the Right Cutter
There are several popular options:
• Guillotine cutter – Clean and simple for beginners.
• V-cutter – Creates a deeper cut that concentrates smoke.
• Punch cutter – Produces a small opening while preserving the cap.
For most beginners, a sharp double-guillotine cutter is the easiest and most reliable choice.
Step 2: Make a Clean Cut
Locate the shoulder of the cigar—the point where the rounded cap begins to curve.
Cut just above this line. Removing too much of the cap may cause the wrapper to unravel, while cutting too little can restrict airflow.
Step 3: Toast the Foot
Before taking your first puff, hold the cigar at a slight angle above the flame without touching it.
Rotate the cigar slowly so the entire foot is evenly toasted.
This creates a more consistent burn.
Step 4: Light the Cigar
After toasting, gently puff while continuing to rotate the cigar.
Avoid rushing. A slow, even light helps maintain flavour throughout the smoke.
